Frequently Asked Questions
Lagos is generally considered safe for travelers. However, as with any foreign country, it is important to be aware of pickpocketing and petty theft, especially in crowded tourist areas. It is also advisable to take precautions when using ATMs or carrying valuables, and to avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas at night.
Option: Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) (https://step.state.gov/step/) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
The currency in Nigeria is the Nigerian Naira (NGN). Credit cards are not widely accepted, so it's advisable to carry cash. You are encouraged to bring dollars and change your currency with a local forex bureau. ATMs are available in major cities but may not always be reliable. The Local "Bureau d Changers" will assist you with changing your Currencies to the local currencies.
Nigeria requires all travelers aged 18 and older to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 with a vaccine approved by the Nigerian government or the World Health Organization (WHO). The accepted vaccines may include those from AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, among others.
Travelers are required to present their vaccination certificate or card showing completion of the full vaccination schedule at the point of entry into Nigeria. Additionally, travelers are advised to check the latest travel advisories and entry requirements as these may change due to the evolving nature of the pandemic.
You will be required to fill the health declaration form before entering into Nigeria. You can follow the below link to do so: https://healthapp.ncdc.gov.ng/
1. Yellow Fever (Mandatory)
- Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Nigeria, especially if you're arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
- You’ll need a Yellow Card (International Certificate of Vaccination) as proof.
2. Malaria Prevention (Very Important)
- Nigeria is a high-risk malaria area year-round.
- You should take antimalarial medication (e.g., Malarone, doxycycline, or mefloquine) — talk to your doctor about which is best for you.
- Use insect repellent, mosquito nets, and wear long sleeves/pants, especially at night
3. Recommended Vaccinations (Strongly Advised)
- Hepatitis A & B – due to the risk from food, water, and contact with bodily fluids.
- Typhoid – especially if you're staying with locals or visiting rural areas.
- Meningitis (MenACWY) – Nigeria is in the “meningitis belt,” especially during the dry season (Dec–June).
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis – general protection.
- Rabies – if you’ll be in remote areas or might interact with animals.
- Polio – Nigeria has made progress, but a booster may still be recommended.
Missing a vacation is bad enough. Losing the money you paid for your vacation is even worse. Trip insurance is therefore recommended. You can purchase travel insurance on your own.

Bringing along $800-$1000, cash on hand, is a good place to start. Before you leave for Nigeria, notify your bank of your travel plans, so they don’t cut you off for fear of fraud. Research the fees you may need to pay for using your credit card to make payments, as they can mount up.
